Introduction

When you hear the word “church,” what comes to mind?

  • A building? A Sunday service? A pastor? A choir?

  • Those things may be part of church life, but the church is the community of people who belong to Jesus Christ.

  • Some may think of a building, a Sunday service, a pastor, a choir, or a particular denomination. These are familiar parts of church life, but understanding our purpose begins with Jesus.

  • We gather in a building, but our purpose continues when we leave it. We come together to worship and grow, and we go into the world to represent Jesus.

  • The church is the people who belong to Him. The local church is a community of believers who gather to worship, learn, pray, care for one another, and carry out His mission.
